Nope, it's not too late to start an online business. And nope the market is not saturated. There’s still SO much room for you.

Today I want to walk you through 7 simple steps that you need to take in order to successfully start an online business. These are high level principles that won’t stop trending anytime soon, and anyone with an internet connection can start implementing with immediate effect!

This List is Not Exhaustive

I want to give a disclaimer, that this list is not exhaustive. This is not everything you need to know, but just some steps. If you want to know about 10 mistakes I made when starting out my business, check out the blog post here.

1) Treat Your Business Seriously

Don’t hide it. Speak it out and tell the people around you. When you start letting people know what you are doing, you start to spot opportunities and connect with others. This helps solidify that what you are doing is serious.

You are the CEO of your business. Even if your side business is a side hustle. No one is going to come along and grow your business for you.

When you believe that you are the CEO of your business, your behaviour changes.

Pay yourself when you get started. You are worthy of the hard work you are putting into your business. This will help you build momentum and celebrate your wins.

2) Work Really Hard at Getting Good at Sales

I know the word “sales” can make some cringe, but without sales you have no business.

You want to also get good at handling objections.

Once you have some results, make sure to collect social proof and testimonials. This is what will help you sell your service or product. Word of mouth is the best way to market your business.

3) Think About the MVP (Minimum Viable Product)

What’s the easiest, quickest and cheapest way to rinse and repeat? The quicker you can get your product or service to market, the quicker you can get that cash and grow your business.

Simple scales and complex clogs.

4) Systemize Everything and Automate What You Can

Nowadays, there's so much tech and apps out there. Use these to your advantage. Get into the habit of recording your processes and systems, whether you are writing or recording your screen.

5) Delegate as Early as You Can

You don’t have to start out with hiring a full time staff member; you can hire on Fiverr or a VA for very little hours a week or month. You have to wear so many hats in the early stages of your business, and getting the help you need will only benefit you in the long run.

Make a list of tasks that are important but that you don't enjoy. Whatever falls on this list, delegate it.

Hire an accountant as soon as you can get one. This is an important job to delegate.

6) Manage Your Energy AKA Energy Hack

How can you make your biz sustainable? It’s so easy to burn out in your business. You don't want to feel trapped by the thing you created yourself!

Define clear boundaries and goals. I want to spend time with my kids, so our business and work revolves around family life. What are the boundaries in your life? Be very clear about what your goals are and what is or is not serving you or your business. For example, I have had to be careful with evening activities. I have certain days that I protect for family time and certain days that I see friends or work etc.

I protect my time.

7) Accept That This is a Long Haul Journey

When I first started out, I didn't want a business, just a small side hustle. I wanted something to bring in extra income. I've definitely evolved and changed since I first started and have fallen in love with entrepreneurship! We are constantly evolving as people and as business owners. Let go of the destination and learn to enjoy the journey. One of the fun things is looking back and seeing how you've grown.

These are the 7 simple steps that I believe will help you build an online business.

Before you leave, I wanted to leave you with a gift. I created a worksheet called The Social Media Manifesto which will help guide you to show up online with confidence, so make sure to download the free printable!
